Sheetz Job Rights
Sheetz Job Rights
Were you denied a job at Sheetz due to your criminal record?
If an employer uses a criminal background check to deny you work, they may be violating the law, especially when their actions result in discrimination.
Outten & Golden is a nationally recognized leader on this issue. As a public interest law firm that protects the rights of workers, we fight to address the harm that job applicants and workers with criminal records face, including the unfair and illegal treatment of Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and multiracial workers in the hiring process.
Our work has led major employers to rethink how they approach the background check process, and in many cases, to change their hiring practices entirely. In the process, we’ve recovered more than $25 million for workers who were denied a chance at a fresh start.

Outten & Golden's Recent Criminal History Discrimination Cases:
• O&G successfully sued the U.S. Census Bureau over its background check process, resulting in a groundbreaking $15 million settlement that gave 450,000+ Black and Hispanic Americans the opportunity to work on future census campaigns.
• O&G and the NAACP are co-counsel in Mandala v. NTT, an ongoing litigation that challenges the tech company’s use of criminal records to deny jobs to qualified Black applicants. This tenacious fight continues today in federal court.
• O&G successfully sued the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) after a Philadelphia bus driver had his employment revoked due to drug-related convictions identified during a background check. The case resulted in recovery for affected job applicants, and SEPTA agreed to stop denying employment based on convictions unless required by law.
• O&G recovered $1.5 million for job applicants who were unfairly denied employment by one of the country’s largest sports and entertainment venues. Our work also led the employer to change the types of interview questions they ask, and to allow applicants to see and dispute their background check results, before denying them a job.
